Despite differences in design and location of various rooms in a home, many families continue to rely on one thermostat to control the climate in the entire house. Settling on the “right” temperature that suits everybody’s preferences – even if that temperature could be achieved with one thermostat setting – can spawn arguments that make the nightly sparring over the remote control seem tame by comparison.
The solution? A zoning system, which maximizes your cooling options while cooling down family tensions.
A zoned heating and cooling system requires that your home be divided into zones, or sections, and outfitted with a separate thermostat and damper system in each zone. This means that a two-story home could be split into at least two zones – upstairs, downstairs and perhaps the basement – each one equipped with a thermostat that can be set for the temperature needs in that particular zone.
Zoning systems make sense because they respond to a simple law of physics that's often the greatest determinant of different temperatures within a home: warm air naturally rises while cool air naturally falls. Among other conditions that create temperature variations in a home are its layout, solar heat gain from windows, ductwork design, and distance from the air conditioner.
Zoning systems add up to real energy savings because conditioned air isn’t being wasted where it isn’t wanted or needed. A zoning system allows you to set the “off” switch in an unused area while other zones in your home remain cool and comfortable.
Think about how inefficient it is to have only one thermostat in your home. The only place where the temperature actually matches the thermostat setting is the exact spot where the thermostat is located. And chances are, your bedrooms and finished basement are located quite a distance from this single thermostat.
